Marisa Karchin

Fanny Mendelssohn of The Mendelssohn Project    

Marisa Karchin was born in Short Hills, New Jersey on February 4, 1992. She has been studying music at The Mannes College of Music, Preparatory Division, in New York City since 2002.  The youngest member of the Honors Program for Voice, she has studied voice with Beth Roberts and Alex Kariotis.  Marisa also studies piano with Lev Samarov and cello with Dorothy Lawson and Chagit Glaser.

At Mannes, Marisa has performed numerous vocal, piano and cello recitals. Her voice recitals have included songs and arias by composers such as Mendelssohn, Faure, Debussy, Bellini, Mozart, Purcell and Copland, with repertoire in French, German, Italian, English, Hebrew and Russian.

Marisa has been a member of the New York City Opera Children's Chorus since the year 2000. Over the past 5 years, she has been in 22 performances of La Boheme, including a Live From Lincoln Center televised performance in 2001, and numerous performances of Carmen, Suor Angelica and Turandot.  She will be performing in the New York City Opera's new production of The Little Prince in November, 2005.

A highlight for Marisa this year was her performance at the 28th Annual Interfaith Holocaust Remembrance Service at Temple Sharey-Tefilo Israel in South Orange, New Jersey of Psalm 23, a work written by composer Louis Karchin, her father.

Marisa is a student in the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth, and is currently entering the 8th grade at Millburn Middle School, where she is an Honors Student.
