Tenor
Marcus Ullmann, tenor, was born in 1967 in Olbernhau near Dresden, and started singing as a member of the Dresden Kreuzchor at the age of ten, thereafter studying with Hartmut Zabel and Margaret Trappe-Wiel at the Hochschule für Musik in Dresden. He also worked with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in Berlin.
He graduated with distinction, and began singing with various Opera Houses in Germany and abroad including State Operas in Dresden and Mainz, Teatro La Fenice, Opera House Rome, Teatro Communale Florence and Los Angeles Opera.
On stage he has appeared successfully in most of the major Mozart-roles, in addition to staged versions of the "St John's Passion" and B-Minor Mass by Bach and "The Creation" and "The Seasons" by Haydn.
Recent concerts include performances of "The Christmas Oratorio" at Athens Concert Hall, Santa Cecilia Rome and the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, "St. Matthew's Passion" at the Alte Oper Frankfurt, Constitution Hall Washington and the Teatro Colon Buenos Aires, "St. John's Passion" at the Barbican Hall, San Marco Venice and Palao Barcelona, B-Minor Mass at the Kölner Philharmonie, Gasteig Munich and Houston Symphony Hall as well as Mozart's Requiem at the Musikverein and the Konzerthaus in Vienna and the Prinzregententheater Munich.
Marcus Ullmann has been collaborating with Karl Friedrich Beringer, Frieder Bernius, Ivor Bolton, Sylvain Cambreling, Pierre Cao, Jesus Lopez Cobos, Michel Corboz, Marcus Creed, Enoch zu Guttenberg, Leopold Hager, Sir Neville Marriner, Kent Nagano, John Nelson, Christoph Poppen, Hans-Christoph Rademann, Jörg Peter Weigle, and with Stephen Somary of The Mendelssohn Project, an international foundation dedicated to the performance, recording and publication of the hundreds of unknown works by Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn.
Last year he gave his debut recital and a second one at Wigmore Hall, London with pianist Alexander Schmalcz. As a recitalist he has also been a guest at such festivals as Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, European Music Festival Stuttgart, Kuhmo in Finland and many others both in Germany and internationally.
In recitals, Marcus Ullmann most frequently works together with Alexander Schmalcz. He has also performed with Irwin Gage, Norman Shetler, Camillo Radicke, Joanna McGregor, Hartmut Höll and Michael Gees.
Marcus Ullmann has recorded numerous CD's including Cantatas, "Magnificat" and the "Christmas oratorio" by Bach under Helmuth Rilling, Schubert's A-Flat-Major Mass under Peter Schreier, "St. Matthew's Passion" under Enoch zu Guttenberg, Mozart's Requiem under Frieder Bernius, C-Minor Mass under Ivor Bolton and Telemann's "St. Matthew's Passion" under Hans-Christoph Rademann. In addition to that he has been the singer of the very first recording of "The Lovers" by Rautavaara for string quintet and high voice and is also part of the prestigious CD-collection celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Prinzregententheater in Munich.
